Materials we use and why
TLDNR version:
Datsusara is committed providing you with the highest quality gear — as much as possible it will be non-toxic and sustainable.
Deep version:
At Datsusara we work to make the highest quality products with the best materials available. We have our favorite, hemp, which is featured in nearly all of our gear. Hemp is naturally durable, breathable, and antimicrobial — it's also safe for you and the environment. That being said, even hemp has it's limitations and sometimes can even be improved by being blended with other organic materials like cotton.
When we make material choices we carefully consider the durability, functionality, toxicity and environmental impact of each component. We prioritize certain of these aspects according to what sort of product we are making.
One example is with our martial arts wear. Here the benefits of 100% hemp are critical to making things maximally breathable, anti-bacterial, and fully non-toxic for intense workouts where plastic exposure could cause harm. The 100% hemp is also durable enough for the product to last a very long time so here even if blending with cotton or polyester made the gi more durable we wouldn't sacrifice that over the other more important features.
With other products, like most of our bags, you might have noticed that we switched from 100% hemp to a 55/45% hemp/organic cotton blend for the main body. We did this after extensive testing revealed that the blended material was over 30% more durable than hemp alone. Cotton has some stretch and it can be woven more tightly so when you blend it with hemp you get a superior hybrid fabric. We also found in testing that the hemp benefits of being naturally anti-microbial and breathable were still present if somewhat reduced. This blend makes the bags extremely durable and they still stay clean and odor free since the level of exposure to funk is very different than a wearable item.
We do still use synthetic materials on some products but we limit this as much as possible. Sometimes there simply isn't a natural material option for particular components and functions. This comes most into play with our bags where we have buckles, straps, and panels where say a high denier polyester might hold up to repetitive high friction stresses far better than even hemp while also keeping the bag at a weight that users will accept.
Another factor we consider is the waste created even in packing and shipping an all natural product. So if say making the bottom panel on a bag out of synthetics makes it last 10+ years instead of 3, it's less polluting to make a small sacrifice for long term durability.
Note if you want even more pure but more simple bags in particular, check out our sister company Odell Sports & Leisure.
Ultimately Datsusara is committed providing you with the highest quality gear — as much as possible it will be non-toxic and sustainable.
Labor Practices, Country of Origin, & Manufacturing
Mots all of our hemp gear is sourced from China where hemp textiles have been masterfully developed for thousands of years, in fact they are the only country that produces viable hemp options. Many countries produce hemp, including here in the United States, but for a myriad of reasons none of them, save for China, are making high quality hemp textiles.
We realize China isn't known for it's high quality goods. However we discovered if you find the right people, pay them a fair wage, and require the best practices then you'll get great results like anywhere else.
Most companies want to lower the cost goods even if it means sacrificing quality to get that low cost. That means planned obsolescence, which is something we truly despise. No matter where are products are made we always build them to last as long as possible.
Finally, wherever we manufacture we look to influence industry to put more attention on natural products which helps with global environmental stewardship.

Care tips for bags and apparel
- Bags: You will likely never need to wash your Datsusara bag as hemp stays naturally clean due to its antimicrobial and breathing properties. Also, often just open air and some sunshine will remove basic odors should they occur. If you feel the bag needs a wash we recommend you only hand wash in cold water (cold water prevents material shrinkage) and line dry. It is possible to machine wash the bags but it's tricky and we cannot warranty against damage from machine washing. As for the "Nasty bags" (which are synthetic) we recommend washing them however you like but line dry.
Fightwear and Apparel: For gis, shorts and other apparel you can wash however you want but we recommend more gentle cycles and lower heat with machines to maximize product life, and do keep in mind the hotter the water the more the hemp and any other natural fibers will shrink. Do not use any bleach as it weakens the hemp, if you need a similar product try Oxiclean but best is a simple natural laundry detergent or something like Rockin Green (their sport detergent is amazing)for heavily soiled stuff. We strongly recommend machine washing a new gi at least 1-3 times to prevent shedding of the material which occurs naturally with our 100% hemp gis.
Sizing info for Apparel
Sizing information is often available at our website on the product page for the item of interest.
Bags have very detailed measurement information on their product page in the "Details" tab. If you are unsure if your gear will fit in a certain size bag, we encourage you to take a look at the very precise measurements we have available on the site and compare that to the size of your current gear and make an educated guess, also check out all of the photos for a product as often there will be very helpful images there.
Gis, Shorts and other apparel size charts if available can be found on the product's page. All of our apparel is full machine washable but keep in mind the hotter the wash and dry cycle the ore likely you'll get some shrinking.

Warranty
Datsusara provides a 3 year warranty on bags and a 1 year warranty on fightwear or apparel against faulty manufacturing. If your item breaks in any way due to a fault in manufacturing while under warranty we will cover the cost of a repair for minor issues or replace it for larger issues free of charge. Please do remember this does not cover natural wear and tear as any natural fiber will wear over time, faster if you are rough on your gear. Datsusara reserves the right to refuse any warranty claim that it deems to be the consumers fault due to misuse, such as loading up bags with C4 or practicing Jiu Jitsu with badgers.
That being said at our discretion we may offer you our wear and tear discount which starts at 30% for year 1, 20% for year two, and 10% for year 3. To request this please email us with your original order number, a picture of and description of the problem.
Also:
If you purchase your item through a distributor or via 3rd party such as Amazon or Ebay any warranty or returns must be handled through the point of purchase and are subject to their terms, conditions and individual warranty policy.

You may either receive store credit or a refund, less all shipping costs and a $1 restock fee per item. Please understand that we are a small company and it would hurt us greatly if we had to pay for shipping expenses and restocking costs on non-defective returns.
*apparel returns must be absolutely unworn for sanitary reasons. If you wish to try something on for size please wear another garment underneath to keep things perfectly clean.
If you would like to exchange your item, please follow these easy steps:

Feedback & Testimonials
We love hearing from you. That being the case you may get an autoresponder or even an AI assisted response for fast informative replies. The rest a human will reply to but do be patient as we try to not tie people to a computer all day here. Non urgent matters might take a bit longer to get a response but do know that we care and pay attention to each every message we receive.

Discounts
When it comes to discounts or “specials” we are not your normal company. Most companies keep their prices inflated assuming they will offer discounts that make people feel like they are getting a deal when in fact they are not. We don’t do that, in fact believe it or not our markup is far lower than just about anyone in the retail business. We source a rare and expensive material, hemp, and then I work very hard to make sure we adhere to good labor standards and a very high level of quality. Making this gear is really quite difficult and probably we should charge far more. Most biz people that see our books think we’re insane to price things as low as we do. But we are trying to keep things affordable for everyone and not play games with regular specials and discounts.
There are times when we will offer a small sale if our stock levels allow or we need to make some room for new inventory, these sales will be announced via our social media outlets Facebook, Instagram , TikTok, and X.
Requests for sponsorship or donations
- In regards to sponsorships, donations or Tribe Datsusara:
Datsusara doesn't have a normal sponsorship or donation request program for a number of reasons. The main reason is we find the world of donations and sponsorships to be very difficult to manage. We are careful who we associate with and like to keep it to people we know in person, or those recommended by others we trust.
That being said you can always ask, but do understand you may not get a fast reply and expect we won't be able to accommodate.
We do have a thing that you may see called Tribe Datsusara but it is strictly by invitation only and we rarely add new members. In short, if we notice you, think you’d be a good addition and have room, then we’ll be in touch.
Requests for products to review
We generally do not offer free gear for reviews. But we sometimes offer discounted purchases for reviews. If we like your style, you have strong following, and high quality reviews we may consider sending you select product samples on us.
Website Payment Issues
If you tried to make a payment on our website, and received a message that the payment failed but you still see a charge on your account, it means that the banking system has put a temporary hold on the funds. The failed payment is a pending transaction that will never go through. Please do not panic, these are temporary authorizations, they will not post but sometimes take 24-48 hours to fall off.
The most common reasons that you will receive a payment failed message are:
1. Your billing address and/or zip code does not match what is on file with your financial institution. Please check the exact address with them.
2. Your CVV code is incorrect
If you tried to pay multiple times, and received the message that the payment failed multiple times, you may see multiple holds on your funds. These charges are all pending, and should not go through. The transactions may show up as pending transactions on your credit card or bank statement until your financial institution releases the holds. Sometimes you can call your bank or card company and get them to release the hold sooner by explaining that it was a failed transaction but in our experience the reps rarely understand what is going on and they can’t fix things.
In short, we don’t have your money unless the transaction goes through and sadly there is nothing we can do to fix this or make the hold drop off faster, so please be patient or contact your institution.
